Although we can just state the top ten agencies in the list from a generic perspective, the real top 10 could be different than what is being stated here as all these agencies are premier organizations of the world working for their mother land, security and constantly work towards its safety of their people and within boundaries. The Top 10 World’s Best Intelligence Agencies 2013 listed here are based on the previous year’s events.

10. Australian Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS), Australia

Established in 1952, during an executive Council meeting by Prime Minister Robert Menzies, and was headed by Alfred Deakin Brookes. The functions and existence of ASIS was a guarded secret even from its own government for almost twenty long years. The primary role of the agency was to gather information and distribute/ transfer secret intelligence. They were also given the responsibility to plan and execute special operations when needed.

9. Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), India

This special organization was formed in 1968, and operated under the leadership of R.N.Kao. This specialized agency functions independently and since then it is responsible for gathering/ transfer external intelligence and counter terrorism in India. In order to do this effectively they are also responsible for gathering information and analysing them from the foreign government, individuals and corporations perspective. The Agency is used effectively by Indian government and is involved in every aspect to safeguard national interests.

8. Canadian Security Intelligence Services (CSIS), Canada

Formed in 1984 by the Act of parliament, Bill C-9, the agency is the country’s premier agency responsible for collecting information, analysing and reporting prior to disseminating intelligence concerning any kind of national threats for its country. Headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario, the agencies functions are overseen by federal court system along with the Security Intelligence Review Committee.

7. Direction Generale De La Securite Exterieure (DGSE), France

The Agency specializes in gathering and disseminating information related to external intelligence. The Agency operates under the directions and supervision of Ministry of Defence. The Agency also operates parallel with the Central Directorate of Interior Intelligence, whilst focusing on internal and external intelligence concerning national security.

6. The Institute for Intelligence and Special Operations, MOSSAD, Isreal

Headquartered in Tel Aviv, Israel, Mossad, is the one of the key national intelligence agency. Mossad is a Hebrew word which literally means “the institute”, was incorporated for taking responsibilities of matters related to Intelligence collection and counter terrorism, apart from safe guarding jewish communities in the year 1949. The Agency director reports directly to the Prime Minister.

5. Federal Security Services (FSB), Russia

Federal Security Services is the top most domestic security organization of the Russian Federation and is also known to be the successor agency of the KGB. The Agency is among the best in countering terrorism, cross border security and surveillance. Headquartered in Lubyanka Square, downtown Moscow, the agency is also believed to work with RAW (India) and other ex-soviet agencies in Russia.

4. Ministry of State Security (MSS), China

Known to be the most active and the largest agency operating under the Government of the People’s Republic of China the agency plays an active role in handling domestic issues as well. It is also said that the Ministry of State Security Agency works closely with other international intelligence Agencies such as ISI from Pakistan.

Situated in London, Secret Intelligence Services popularly known as MI6 is a well know and reputable intelligence Agency with remarkable achievements dealing with countering terrorism and addressing several other national and international issues through their intelligence services. The agency is involved in working closely with United States and Israel agencies.

2. Central Intelligence Agency, CIA, United States

Central Intelligence Agency was formed in 1947 and has its headquarters in Langley, Virginia which is situated near Washington D.C. With over 22,000 employees the Agency is the most popular and among the best funded intelligence agencies of the world. The Agency works on the basic principles which are very much similar to other intelligence agencies operating across the world.
